We all wear masks at some time in our lives—it’s part of human nature.
The problem comes when masks become the norm and we lose ourselves in the process of trying to please others.
Many neurodivergent individuals ‘mask,’ which involves the intentional suppression or alteration of one’s traits, behaviours and emotions to conform to societal expectations, essentially concealing one’s authentic self, often to fit in or avoid judgment.
While masking can be a very important coping mechanism, it can have a negative effect on mental health and wellbeing.
This Masking and Unmasking Exploration Activity invites participants to begin a journey of self awareness and discovery, encouraging reflection on the strategies they employ to mask their traits and emotions and think of ways they can creatively and authentically ‘unmask’.
Our school holiday groups are run by one (1) Registered Music Therapist and two (2) Allied Health Assistants. Our staff are experienced in supporting participants with a wide range of disabilities, and communication and sensory needs.
