Music therapy helping kids to hear, listen and speak
This week Miss Vicky took our Music Beat Therapy program to Hear and Say where families from regional and rural Australia joined her for a fun morning of music making. Miss Vicky ran a group as a part of Hear and Say’s Telepractice services.
Hear and Say is a world-leading Paediatric Auditory-Verbal and cochlear implant centre founded by Brisbane Speech Pathologist Dr Dimity Dornan AO in 1992.
Twice a year, Hear and Say holds an intensive program for rural and remote families on site at the Brisbane and Townsville Centres.
The Intensive provides face-to-face speech and language assessment and lessons as well the opportunity for audiology consultations, and music therapy groups.
These groups focus on giving the children the opportunity to make and experience music, learn about sound concepts and improve their listening skills as well as support their developing social, emotional, physical and communication skills.
Miss Vicky and the children had a wonderful time making different sounds, connecting these to different instruments, timbres, volumes and of course singing, dancing and playing a wide range of instruments.
Music Beat Therapy Services provide music therapy social skills groups to families accessing Hear and Say services, and music therapy individual sessions to children with hearing loss.
