Our Approach

Our Values, Beliefs & The Music Beat Way

At Music Beat Therapy Services, our work is guided by a clear set of values, clinical principles, and a consistent approach to care we call The Music Beat Way.

This approach shapes how we deliver therapy, how we work with participants and families, and how we support meaningful outcomes through music.

A Person-Centred Approach

We provide person-centred, accessible, and neurodiversity-affirming therapy.

Being person-centred means that every program is built around the individual; their strengths, needs, interests, and goals.

We recognise that each person experiences the world differently. Our therapists work with these differences, supporting each individual in ways that are respectful, flexible, and meaningful.

Music therapy sessions are tailored to support not only therapeutic outcomes, but also identity, autonomy, and wellbeing.

Neurodiversity-Affirming Practice

We are committed to a neurodiversity-affirming approach, which recognises and respects neurological differences as a natural part of human diversity.

Rather than focusing on “fixing” differences, we aim to:

  • support authentic self-expression
  • build on individual strengths
  • create environments that are responsive and inclusive
  • promote wellbeing and participation

This approach ensures that therapy is both supportive and empowering.

Access, Equity & Inclusion

We believe that everyone has the right to access music and use it to support their health and wellbeing.

Our services are designed to be accessible across a range of settings, including:

  • clinic-based services
  • home and community environments
  • schools and organisations

We aim to reduce barriers to access and provide services that are inclusive, flexible, and responsive to community needs.

Evidence-Based and Reflective Practice

Our Registered Music Therapists combine:

  • current research and evidence
  • clinical expertise
  • lived experience and individual context

This balanced approach ensures that therapy is both evidence-informed and person-led.

We are committed to continuous learning, reflection, and professional development, ensuring that our services remain current, effective, and aligned with best practice.

Ethical & Professional Standards

Music Beat Therapy Services adheres to the:

  • Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA) Code of Ethics
  • NDIS Code of Conduct

All staff maintain high clinical and professional standards through ongoing training, supervision, and internal processes.

This ensures safe, ethical, and accountable service delivery for all participants.

The Music Beat Way

The Music Beat Way is our integrated approach to therapy. It brings together our values, clinical knowledge, and practical experience into a consistent model of care.

At its core, The Music Beat Way is about using music intentionally to support connection, engagement, and meaningful outcomes.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Individualised and Goal-Focused

Programs are tailored to each participant, with clear goals that guide therapy and measure progress.

Relationship-Based Therapy

We prioritise building strong therapeutic relationships. Music provides a shared experience that supports trust, connection, and communication.

Strengths-Based Approach

We focus on what each person can do, using their strengths and interests as the foundation for growth and development.

Flexible and Responsive

Therapy is adapted in real time to meet the participant’s needs, energy, and responses within each session.

Functional and Meaningful Outcomes

We focus on outcomes that support everyday life, including:

  • communication
  • emotional regulation
  • social connection
  • participation and engagement
  • wellbeing and quality of life

Music becomes a practical and transferable tool that can be used beyond therapy sessions.

The Role of Music

Music is a powerful and unique therapeutic medium. It can support expression, connection, learning, and regulation in ways that are accessible and engaging.

For many people, music provides:

  • a non-verbal way to communicate
  • a safe space for emotional expression
  • a structured and predictable environment
  • opportunities for shared experiences

This makes music therapy particularly effective for individuals who may find traditional forms of communication or therapy more challenging.

Our Purpose

Our purpose is to bring music therapy to as many people in the community as possible and support individuals to achieve their goals through music.

We aim to help people access the therapeutic potential of music as a tool for growth, connection, and wellbeing.

Our Team

Our team of Registered Music Therapists and Allied Health Therapy Assistants brings extensive clinical experience across disability, mental health, early childhood, aged care, and community settings.

Music Beat Therapy Services was founded by Dr Vicky Abad, an internationally recognised music therapist and educator, and continues to be guided by strong clinical leadership and a commitment to quality care.
